Malaysia’s Men’s Singles shuttler, Daren Liew has set bigger targets for himself as he wants to further improve his world ranking by getting into the top-30 shuttlers by the end of the ongoing year.
World Number 42 ranked shuttler, Daren has been producing terrific results for the last nine months. At the start of the year, Daren was ranked at Number 89 in the Men’s Singles world rankings, and his aim was to break into top 50 shuttlers by the end of the year.
However, his wonderful performances in recent tournaments helped him in achieving his target three months before the end of the year. Now, he wants to make good use of these three months and is confident to reach in the row of top 30 in the world.
At last week’s Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, Daren proved his skills by beating home favourite and higher ranked Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the opening round of the event. However, he could not continue his winning streak because of suffering with a thumb injury in his racquet – hand, while playing his second round match against his younger team-mate.
Daren said, “I was diving to retrieve a smash from Misbun when I landed on my thumb. It was really unfortunate and really a waste because after the first round upset win over Simon, the draw was actually favourable for me to reach at least the quarter-finals.”
However, the shuttler also said that the injury is not severe and will be cured in few days.
Despite achieving his goal to reach into the top 50 positions, the 24-year-old shuttler is still hungry for more as he is not yet satisfied with Number 42 position in the world.
Daren added, “It’s nice to finally break into the top 50 but I’m not satisfied yet. Now, my aim is break into the top 30 before the year is out. Our coach (Rashid Sidek) has plans to help us boost our rankings, in particular (Chong) Wei Feng and (Chan) Kwong Beng.”
Daren’s next assignment is to win a medal at SEA Games, which will take place in Indonesia, this November.
